omg polyproto does the thing
in a previous post i dumped my thoughts about what an ideal replacement for discord would look like. at the time none of the projects i saw tackling the issue had all the qualities i wanted, but i recently found that polyproto is pretty much exactly what i was looking for:
- decentralized
- open source
- identity federation, not content federation
- simpler protocol, not matrix
the biggest difference from what i find ideal is that it uses websockets and json instead of a small binary protocol, but this really does not matter to the extent that the qualities i listed above do.
it seems they're still just planning and building a foundation, but they are actively working on it and seeing things coming together in realtime is exciting! see the polyproto blog for some more info, the most recent post has some comparisons to other messaging solutions that might give you a better idea for what kind of niche polyproto fills
